Gardner Engine in a Land Rover

We were commissioned to install a Gardner 4LK in a 1970 Land Rover Series II. Land Rovers have been fitted with 4LK’s before, but only by dispensing with the four wheel drive. Our installation retains the 4WD, so it’s a first ever!

Here’s what one LR enthusiast had to say:

Rob Darbyshire from London reports:

I’ve had the pleasure of driving and being driven in Tangent’s 1970 Land Rover 109, with a Gardner 4LK fitted. I’ve got a 1951 80 with a Perkins Prima so have some experience with diesel conversion in a Land Rover.

Tangent has managed to keep 4wd which is astonishing and a lot of thought has gone into how best to achieve that. The engine was very smooth and was certainly quieter than the Perkins.  Following it on a long run there was minimal exhaust smoke. They have not only put a Gardner in a Land Rover, but have made significant bulkhead modifications to allow the 4LK to fit.   They’ve created new smart interior panelling and dashboard structure. They’ve also overcome challenges around the sump, brakes, throttle linkage, driveshafts and numerous other things as well. I can’t wait to hear the MPG figures.

A fantastic period LR adaptation.  The LR was of course only half the story.  Re-manufacturer of the engine itself is the other half. Joe has gone to great lengths with this.  Incredible that it is from 1935 and runs so well. I’m sure the 4LK will
last another 85 years.

I’m only sorry the 80″ is just too small to be practical for a 4LK but I look forward to finding a suitable donor vehicle for Joe.
